What I wanna know...

When did you start singing?

If you wanna know.. I was sixteen years old with a whole lotta soul when I started singing. .

Do you remember the 1st song you sang, and where you were when you sang it?

The closest I can come to the first song I sang would be " Well Hello There". I sang it in a little juke joint in Chi Town

How has your blood and guts style developed over the years?

The style has developed over time, being able to stretch one's self in a self-contained unit or band. We didn't limit ourselves.

If I played the 16 year old Joyce’s record “I Still Love You” back to back with “Love Changes” would I know it was the same voice?

The voice was much younger but I would like to feel, your soul, would feel the same listening to each song.

Wisdom

If you and Glenn were white, how different do you think the acceptance of Mother’s Finest would’ve been, particularly in the US? Slightly or extremely?

The music and the concept was far ahead of it's time. It wasn't until Living Colour that the times caught up with us, but by then we had already been disbanded for six years.

Music is music correct? Do you think it’s the public or the industry that ‘color codes’ & labels music?

It's definitely the Industry. Mother's Finest always had a powerful mixed audience at the live performances. It wasn't until we started recording that differences were made, Marketing, Promotion, Radio etc.

Most groups don’t stay together nowadays. What’s the magic that has kept Mother’s Finest on stage ‘giving all the love you have inside of you’ all these years?

Must be a past life debt we owe to each other, and what a wonderful way to even the score! So our souls can move on.

What cha...

What cha listening to now?

Right now I am listening to material for my solo project. I hope to do the recording in Hamburg this year.

What cha watching, or what have you recently seen and dug? (TV, film, DVD)

The last films I completely enjoyed were "BLADE" one and two, "Underworld", Matrix" and there's more but not now.

What cha doing next week, next year?

Next year I will continue to tour with the Mutha's, the Daughter's of Soul, be in my new home in Atlanta, to start my solo project or be finishing it. Design some "Babyjean" fashion, be closer to starting my Soul Food Vegetarian Restaurant, rehearsing my new band, finishing my cook book and working out and who knows Life is good!!!! Love you Sandra, thanks for including me in your beautiful vision. Peace Joyce Kennedy
