Hathaway. The inheritance is clear. Her voice is rich, deep & magnetic,
her air is honest, positive & bright. Her father, the late Donny Hathaway,
was a prophet of soul, a prolific contributor to the ‘black pool
of genius.’
New Lalah Hathaway CD!
There are projects that are special, there are artists that are special, then there are special artists that do projects that are particularly special. Lalah Hathaway and her new CD “Self Portrait” is one of these instances.
In sunny California, up too many late nights, flipping thru tivo, and over wayyy too many glasses of Cabernet (for me (SSV) that is, Lalah can’t drink!), Lalah and I looked back, dug deep, sang, shared stuff, giggled, and wrote three songs that are included on her new CD. I’m honored to have been able to put my two ‘sense’ into what I believe is a signature release in Lalah Hathaway’s career.
Lalah has reached into herself, hence the title, and shown us what flows in her veins. You feel her. You feel the life of that little girl in a big world without her physical father. A father that is everywhere for most of us, that she carries literally inside of her. Check out the haunting collage on the inside back cover. Wow.
You feel the struggles and triumphs of her story unfolding before your ears, and it is delectable.
You feel this woman embracing herself fully, lustfully, and it’s a succulent release.
As always, Lalah’s voice is ear candy, but this time there’s more. There’s a new tension and willingness to explore her ‘nextness’, for lack of a real term.
OK so obviously, I’m digging this project. I’m extremely happy and proud of my girl, my beautiful sista friend.
As SOON as “Self Portrait” is released, get it, own it. Feel Lalah.

Lalah:
”It was awesome, truly inspiring and wonderful to be with all those
women. The U.S. market can be hard sometimes and I’m hoping
we can bring the show to U.S. audiences. Watching each of them from
the wings was like being in a big master class!” |
